LANSING ? Michigan students receiving the State Competitive Scholarship and the Tuition Grant in the current fiscal year will see lesser maximum awards under action taken last week by the Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority.

The authority, which is in charge of setting minimum and maximum levels of financial aid, acted after the Legislature approved reduced appropriations for the higher education budget, including elimination of the Promise Grant.

The State Competitive Scholarship maximum award was reduced from $1,300 in the 2008-09 fiscal year to $510 for the current year.

The Tuition Grant, which goes to students attending independent colleges, was reduced from $2,100 to $1,610.

The House Fiscal Agency has a rundown of the action in a new memo released Wednesday.
