LANSING – Republican gubernatorial nominee Rick Snyder sent a letter to Democratic nominee Virg Bernero on Wednesday urging that the two conduct three debates before the November election. While Bernero did not make an official response to the request, there are indications he will call for as many as eight debates.
In the letter, Snyder suggested the debates occur before voters begin submitting absentee ballots.
“I have instructed my staff to get into contact with yours to work out the details, but we must address the issues vital to Michigan’s long-term success: how we will create more jobs, how we will revitalize our economy, how we will protect our natural resources and how we would tackle all the other issues that are plaguing our state,” Snyder said.
“Given your record of public service and my record of creating jobs for Michiganders, it is obvious that we both want to help our state,? he said. ?I am sure you will agree to participate in these debates and allow us each to have the opportunity to answer tough questions from the people who will choose one of us to governor our state.”
Spokespeople for Bernero could not be reached for comment.
However, a Grand Rapids television station reported Wednesday that Bernero will call in return for eight debates.
