LANSING – Consumers

Energy Company and DTE Electric Company customers could soon pay more, or less,

depending on when they use power under tariffs approved Monday by the Public

Service Commission.

The orders

(Case No. U-17688 for Consumers and U-17689 for DTE) require the utilities to offer time-of-use

rates to customers with smart meters. DTE’s program would start immediately and

Consumers’ by January 1, 2017.

The PSC in a

release said the change would give customers who opt into the program an

opportunity to cut their electric costs.

The orders

also change how costs are allocated between transmission and generation.

The DTE

order would, effective July 1, cut rates for primary customers by 4.7 percent

and increase rates for residential customers by 3.7 percent.

Both orders

were approved on 2-1 votes.
