BOSTON – Strategy Analytics predicts that by the end of 2010 there will be 12.2 million navigation systems and 6.8 million emergency and roadside assistance telematics units shipped annually across North America, Europe and Japan – a third more than 2002.

The report, from the Boston based organization says that the 2010 market opportunity projection is in line with OEM-stated telematics commitments.

For the last three years, product positioning and pricing strategies for navigation systems continue severely inhibit the development of a volume in-vehicle consumer market, Strategy Analytics had said earlier. But market changes during 2003 suggested that market players have started to address the opportunity for offboard dynamic navigation accessible through wireless devices.

The research also indicates that by 2010 the market for in-vehicle audio entertainment systems will be worth $34 billion in terms of OEM and aftermarket systems sales across North America, Europe and Japan – an increase from $19 billion in 2003.
