LANSING – While final figures will not be available until at least next week, a spokesperson for the Department of Treasury said the department was “very pleased with the results” of the tax amnesty program, which closed June 30. It began on May 15.
More than 13,000 taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, participated in the program that was instituted to help bring in revenue, said Terry Stanton. The precise number of participants, and the breakdown of how many were individuals and how many businesses, is still being calculated, Stanton said.
Less than midway in the program, on June 1, Mr. Stanton said that already 5,000 people had submitted applications for the amnesty.
While he would not outline figures the state may have raised, Mr. Stanton said the department was “very pleased” with the results.
When legislation creating the amnesty program was signed by former Governor Jennifer Granholm, state officials had hoped it would raise at least $80 million.
