LANSING – The Michigan Senate Technology and Energy Committee will be split into two separate committees with emerging technologies being paired with homeland security under a series of committee assignments announced by Senate Majority Leader-elect Sen. Mike Bishop (R-Rochester).
The renamed Energy Policy Committee will be chaired by Sen. Bruce Patterson (R-Canton), who had chaired the former Technology and Energy Committee. The new Homeland Security and Emerging Technologies Committee will be chaired by Sen. Cameron Brown (R-Sturgis).
In his selections, Bishop also created a new committee on Campaign and Election Oversight, chaired by Sen. Michelle McManus (R-Lake Leelanau) while eliminating the Senate Gaming and Casino Oversight panel.
The announcements also confirm assignments first reported by Gongwer News Service on Monday that Senate Majority Floor Leader Alan Cropsey (R-DeWitt) will serve on the Appropriations Committee instead of chairing the Judiciary Committee and that Sen. Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland) will chair both the Judiciary and Education Committees. Cropsey will chair the Judiciary and Corrections Subcommittee of Appropriations.
The Appropriations Committee is growing, adding one member from each party to make it an 11-7 Republican edge. Most other committees retain the same one-member edge for the majority party.
The Appropriations Committee has four members newly-elected to the Senate, but who all had served in the House: John Pappageorge (R-Troy) who will be vice chair, Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw Township), Mark Jansen (R-Gaines Township), and Glenn Anderson (D-Westland).
The Families and Human Services Committee shrunk by two members, and now stands at three members. Sen. Bill Hardiman (R-Kentwood), who had chaired that committee as well as the relevant Appropriations subcommittee, will instead serve as vice chair of the standing committee and chair of the Human Services subcommittee of Appropriations. Jansen will serve as chair.
Sen.-elect Randy Richardville (R-Frenchtown Township), another former House member new to the Senate, will take over the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee that had been headed by Bishop.
Below is how things will stand when the Senate returns for the 94th Legislature; numbers next to the committee names indicate the Republican/Democratic split.
