LANSING – Those involved with providing social services, or who might have to direct people to those who do, can now have the information they need at their fingertips wherever they are.

The Department of Human Services launched the first known mobile phone application for human services resources. The current app works on Android phones and another coming later in the month will work on iPhones.

“DHS continues to utilize technology to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness in serving vulnerable children, adults and families,” DHS Director Ismael Ahmed said.

The apps provide users with the most recent information about applying for assistance, including the location of the closest DHS office, as well as opportunities to report child abuse or benefits fraud.

Users also can find information about becoming a foster parent or contracting with the department to provide services.

“Our target is those who are helping,” said DHS spokesperson Edward Woods. For instance, he said ministers could use the apps to guide members of their congregations to assistance programs.

The department spent $6,000 developing each of the apps, but is providing them for free download on the appropriate phones.
