LANSING – Two bills dealing with designated technology parks known as SmartZones moved their way through the Michigan House on Tuesday, one through the Commerce Committee and another through the full chamber.
The House concurred in Senate changes to HB 5609 , sending that bill on to the governor. The legislation allows three new SmartZones to be designated by the end of the calendar year. The House version had given Michigan Economic Development Corporation until the end of 2009 to designate the parks, but the Senate moved that date up.
The Commerce panel unanimously reported SB 1203 to the full body, which is tie-barred to the House bill, earlier in the day. That bill allows a local government with a technology park to join together with another municipality without the park to designate the joint area as a technology park, which supporters say creates a “hub” for technological businesses.
