LANSING Legislation giving Michigan authority once more to participate in the 42-state sales tax project was signed into law Monday giving Michigan a standardized system to collect sales and use taxes on catalog and Internet sales.

Michigan had been part of the initial development of the project, but the state’s authority to participate had expired. Under HB 5502 and HB 5503 (PA 172 and PA 173), definitions are changed in the state’s use and sales taxes to meet definitions in the streamlined agreement.

HB 5504 (PA 174) allows the state treasurer to enter into the streamlined sales and use tax agreement with other states. And HB 5505 (PA 175) sets specific taxes on interstate trucking firms that use diesel fuel, as well as on people who store, register and transfer vehicles.

Granholm signed the bills on Monday.
