LANSING – In an effort to help the state’s economy, Governor Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday signed legislation expanding job training opportunities in high demand fields, by working with companies that need to develop training for job openings.

The bills, SB 1342 (PA 359) and HB 6185 (PA 360), were part of some 48 bills signed by Granholm on Tuesday as the state prepared to shut down non-emergency operations for the Christmas holiday. In its lame duck session, which ended with a 25-hour marathon a week ago, the Legislature sent Ms. Granholm more than 200 bills for her review and signature.

The job training bills will help make the state’s community colleges stronger players with the state in terms of job development efforts, she said in a statement. The legislation will allow community colleges to tailor job training needs by entering into contracts with companies needing workers to develop training for those positions.

The training programs would be paid for by income taxes withheld by the employers.
