LANSING – Governor-elect Rick Snyder and legislative leaders told a crowd of more than 500 on Monday that they are committed to working together to solve the myriad issues facing Michigan.
“We’ve started a good dialogue and we’ll continue that path. We have to make this a team method,” Snyder said of his relationship with the incoming Legislature. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers agreed there will be heated debates in the coming months, but common ground will be found to solve the state’s challenges.
House Speaker-elect Jase Bolger (R-Marshall) said he feels lawmakers can immediately agree on regulatory reform because all have been inundated with calls from constituents regarding bureaucratic red tape.
House Minority Leader-elect Richard Hammel (D-Mount Morris Twp.) said he expects the budget to be all consuming, as it should be.
Both he and Sen. John Gleason (D-Flushing) reached out to Snyder, saying Democrats want to work with the administration.
“I’m very proud you’re my governor,” Gleason said of Snyder’s walk and talk on bipartisanship and how he handled his gubernatorial campaign.
Snyder said it is his hope all Michiganders work together because government isn’t “here to solve all the issues.”
Pulling out a Moody’s scorecard on Michigan regarding future employment, where it ranked dead last, Snyder demonstrated how he wants to beat expectations by crinkling up the paper to the applause of all of those in the audience.
“It is not just time to talk. It is time to act,” he said.
