ANN ARBOR ? Internet search engine Google will open an office in Ann Arbor this fall that will employ 1,000 people over the next five years in jobs that pay an average of $47,000 a year, the company announced Tuesday at a news conference.
The new employees are needed to staff up the headquarters for Google’s AdWords business – which offers “pay-per-click” ads that are triggered when Google users search for certain words – Google’s primary revenue source.
Michigan’s Economic Growth Authority is expected to approve $38 million in Single Business Tax credits over 20 years for Google, whose development is expected to generate $165 million in tax revenue over that time.
David Fischer, Google director of online sales and operations, said he expects the office to be up and running by this fall. No decision has been made yet on whether Google will build or lease space in Washtenaw County. Google already has a small sales office in Southfield.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm characterized Google’s move as a “huge, huge, huge, huge thing.”
The move to Michigan was driven by Google co founder Larry Page who was born in East Lansing and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995 with an engineering degree.
