DETROIT ? Some 10 percent of chief information officers in the Detroit area expect to hire IT professionals in the third quarter, while 5 percent anticipate staff reductions, giving Southeast Michigan a 5 percent net employment gain, up from 3 percent in the second quarter.

The surveys were conducted by an independent research firm and developed by Robert Half Technology, which hires IT professionals on a project and full-time basis.

?Continued corporate expansion is prompting many CIOs to initiate new projects and expand hiring plans,? said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology. ?As a result, competition for the most skilled candidates is increasing as hiring managers seek individuals who can support internal staff and assist with new development initiatives.?

The local results reflect a two-quarter rolling average based on the responses of 200 CIOs from a stratified random sample of companies in the Detroit area with 100 or more employees; 1,400 executives were queried for the national data.
