ANN ARBOR ? The deadline for Michigan Life Sciences companies that want to hire business students through the University of Michigan and MichBio ? and receive a 50 percent subsidy for 12-weeks of summer wages ? is Jan. 15.

The students, candidates for a Master?s degree in Business Administration or a Bachelor?s degree in Business Administration, come through the Marcel Gani Internship program at the U-M?s Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and BioConnections. Last year, BioConnections placed about 30 interns in more than 20 companies statewide.

The business student interns can assist companies with a variety of assignments including business plan development, market analysis, market strategy, product management, financial review, strategic planning, day-to-day operations, and sales and marketing activities.

The joint internship program is a 12-week assignment for students and the life science company decides the job description. The internship cost is jointly subsidized, 50 percent, by BioConnections and Marcel Gani at approximately $550 per week.

?We are looking for companies that are willing to sponsor an intern in the Life Sciences industry,?? said MichBio?s Marietta Van Buhler. ?Employers must agree to pay the student?s wages up front at a salary of $1,100 a week for 12 weeks and we provide a 25 percent subsidy. The Gani program provides another 25 percent reimbursement.?

The Gani program is looking for companies that are on a growth trajectory, said spokeswoman Victoria Bennett.

?If they?re in research and development and now ready to grow, that?s the perfect time for our interns,?? she said. ?We want our students working with senior decision makers. We want our students to have open access to the organization because that?s how they can make the biggest impact.?

Companies interested in the program need to complete their application by January 15, 2005. Online applications are available at ZLI.bus.umich.edu
