LANSING – While Governor Jennifer Granholm and others have publicly said they hope the Legislature can vote on an agreement on developing energy from renewal sources and reforming utility regulations when it returns this week, it appears such an agreement is unlikely at this time.
Meetings have been ongoing between lawmakers and interest groups trying to forge a compromise, but so far an agreement has not been reached.
A chance that something could be in place by Wednesday, when the House and Senate are scheduled to meet, remains, but most officials seem to think a final resolution will not be reached until September at the earliest.
While opponents still try to keep the proposal from giving greater leeway to Michigan’s largest utilities, sources have indicated that most of the discussion deals with how much electricity the state should generate from renewable resources into the next decade.
