LOS ANGELES – An inventor who was involved in two auto accidents has written software that sends an alert sound from his cell-phone when the driver gets within 300 feet of an approaching traffic signal.

The Linux-based software-only solution can be downloaded directly onto a GPS-enabled cell-phone by the cellular service provider, who will and install the software. No handset modifications are needed, because it is software-only. Interaction with the software is not required by the user. The software runs in the background on the phone.

The City of Los Angeles tested and endorsed the system in March last year, and is working with Thompson to deploy it.
