ROCHESTER The Automation Alley Trading Company is hosting a half-day seminar at Oakland University to help Southeast Michigan companies learn how to develop business strategies to compete smarter with global players.

World Trade Week 2004: Proven Strategies for Competing and Growing in the Global Economy also includes keynote speaker David Littmann, senior vice president and chief economist for Comerica Bank. Littman will share his insight on Michigans business climate and discuss when and how those businesses might find opportunities this year and in 2005.

The U.S. Department of Commerce also will award its Export Achievement Certificate, which recognizes small and medium-sized businesses who have successfully entered or expanded their global markets.

Hayes Jones, director of the Automation Alley Trading Company, worked with local business leaders to specifically tailor the program to them.

It was designed with the small and mid-sized manufacturer in mind, Jones said. The program addresses how they can successfully defend and grow their business, not only across the street but around the world.

In the seminar, participants will hear about nine proven strategies successful companies use to compete effectively with lost-cost manufacturers and explore the combination of strategies that might work best for each company. Participants also will understand why China and other low-cost countries are emerging as threats. Whats more, 360vu/Manufacturing Extension Program industry experts will help identify business strategies and the next step to take to do business overseas.
