LANSING – Officials in the administration of President Barack Obama and three Great Lakes governors, including Gov Jennifer Granholm, will meet to discuss the threat of the Asian carp to the Great Lakes on February 8.

The summit will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the White House and include Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard. Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn also will be on hand, according to a statement from Granholm’s office.

Meanwhile, the newly created Michigan House Shoreline Caucus is filing an amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court regarding state intervention regarding the Asian carp’s threat to the Great Lakes after that court recently rejected Michigan’s request to close the shipping locks. Rep. Arlan Meekhof (R-West Olive) is spearheading the effort of the caucus, which has retained attorney John Bursch of Warner Norcross & Judd to write the brief.

“We intend to use our amicus brief to demonstrate to the court the magnitude of the crisis and the need for quick intervention,” Bursch said.
