ANN ARBOR ? As expected, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners last week approved the Wireless Washtenaw Advisory Board’s recommendation to award 20-20 Communications of Ann Arbor as the preferred partner for the countywide wireless program.

Three areas will be established in the pilot project ? city of Ann Arbor, city of Saline and some rural areas that are parts of the villages of Manchester, Bridgewater Township, Freedom Township, Manchester Township and Sharon Township.

20-20 will partner with Siemens, CenturyTel and BelAir, on the project. The service will offer unrestricted free wireless Internet connectivity at speeds slightly higher than dial up, 84 kilobits per second. Premium services will start at $35 a month for 500 kilobits per second. Additional upgrades and services will be available for businesses and other high-demand users.

Eventually, the plan calls for some 6,000 radios to be placed on water towers, buildings, light poles and more.
