DETROIT – Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program will present four days of interactive STEM activities at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational from July 19-22 in Midland.
Over four days, DAPCEP will engage students visiting the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational at the Midland Country Club in Midland, Michigan in a variety of workshops in the event’s STEM Center.
Inside The STEM Center, students can participate in a variety of engaging, hands-on experiences in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is free for all spectators Wednesday – Saturday. DAPCEP workshops include:
- Machine Learning – Quick Draw Game: students will learn how machines gain intelligence and be able to identify what artificial intelligence (AI) is – and is not.
- Write an Algorithm – students will explore building their own algorithms.
- Tiny Sorter – students explore arduino and learn about teachable machines.
- Digital Microscope – students will investigate objects using a digital microscope.
DAPCEP’s participation in the event is part of the organization’s strategy to increase student access to high quality out-of-school time (OST) STEM programs to students throughout Michigan. Expanding DAPCEP programs to locations across the state will meet unmet demand and equip more Michigan students with the skills needed to succeed in STEM. Among the students attending will be those from Michigan’s GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) – a college access initiative providing students and families the support and resources they need for college success.
The activities at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational are just part of a summer of STEM activities for DAPCEP. These include a variety of unique summer camps for all ages, in and out-of-state College Tours, and the STEM Academy, a two-year program starting in July for 10th grade students in Oakland County.
“With all the exciting innovations in engineering and all the STEM fields right now, it’s critical that we extend our programs to students throughout Michigan,” says DAPCEP executive director Michelle Reaves. “We enjoy helping build STEM skills in the students who will help engineer the future.”
Each year 13,000 students from Pre-K- 12 grade take advantage of DAPCEP’s unique opportunities for future leaders to explore the world and its possibilities. Since 1976, 74,000 students have taken advantage of DAPCEP programs and nearly 70 percent have gone on to pursue STEM related careers.
