LANSING – The shuttered Palisades Nuclear Power Plant met the first step on the long road to reopening Tuesday when Wolverine Power Cooperative signed a long-term agreement with Holtec International to buy power when the plant reopened.
Wolverine, a Michigan-based nonprofit power company, agreed to buy two-thirds of the power generated by the 800-megawatt nuclear power plant in Van Buren County. Indiana-based Hoosier Energy agreed to purchase the remaining third.
“The executed power purchase agreement represents a significant milestone in our journey towards reopening the plant, a historic moment for Michigan and the country,” said Holtec Nuclear Generation and Decommissioning President Kelly Trice.
Holtec took control of the nuclear plant near Lake Michigan in June 2022 and the plant was shut down for decommissioning in May 2022, even as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pounded on the door to keep it open.
If an operator is found and the plant makes it through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s uncharted reopening process, it would be the first nuclear power plant to have been fully shut down and restarted in United States history.
