DETROIT – The wireless provider T-Mobile says it has fired up its Extended Range LTE service in Detroit and most of Michigan. The 700-megahertz “low band” spectrum carries both T-Mobile’s LTE service farther from cell towers, and deeper into buildings, than previous technologies.

T-Mobile has now rolled out the 700 MHz service in 204 metropolitan areas — besides Detroit, other Midwestern cities served include Kansas City, Minneapolis and Cleveland. The company says that means T-Mobile LTE customers there can experience better coverage in suburban and rural areas because the signal reaches further and penetrates deeper than before.

In addition to the Detroit area, 700 MHz now also extends to customers in Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Bay City/Saginaw, Jackson, Ludington, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Houghton Lake, and Alpena. T-Mobile also said it expects to light up Extended Range LTE in areas in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula later this year.
