SOUTHFIELD—Lawrence Technological University has announced the formation of a fifth college within the university—the College of Health Sciences.
LTU President Tarek M. Sobh said the decision reflects the university’s addition of several healthcare education programs over the past six years, with more to come.
LTU introduced a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 2017, in partnership with the healthcare group Ascension Michigan.
The university added a Master of Science in Healthcare Management degree in 2019 and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion programs in the Fall 2022 semester.
“These programs currently reside in three of the four colleges, which does not allow for a suitable academic, financial and governance support structure to not only allow them to grow and capitalize on appropriate synergies, but to also add potential new programs that we are currently contemplating, including, but not limited to occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, chiropractic medicine, nutrition, and other health and clinical graduate and doctoral programs,” Sobh said. “To create the appropriate structure, it is my pleasure to announce the creation of Lawrence Technological University’s fifth college, the College of Health Sciences.”
Sobh said LTU’s Board of Trustees voted in October to authorize the creation of the college, and its administrative and budgetary structures are now in place. The college will be led initially by Interim Provost Richard Heist, until the volume of programs requires a full-time dean, to be selected in a national search.
The College of Health Sciences will initially house the nursing department, the physician assistant department, and the master’s degree program in healthcare management. A contractual arrangement requires the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion to remain in LTU’s College of Engineering, but that program will affiliate with the new college.
“With this new addition, current and future health sciences programs at LTU will be able to build and efficiently utilize a structure that will allow for shared resources and partnerships with healthcare providers,” Sobh said. “This marks yet another milestone in Lawrence Tech’s rich history of innovatively addressing the national workforce needs and the future of work.”
