Michigan’s game sector is gathering speed

The gaming sector in Michigan is well-established in many areas. There are more than 20 game development countries that call the state their home, as well as a thriving casino industry. It might seem like, therefore, that not a lot would have changed in recent years, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Michigan’s gaming sector has made big gains over the last couple of years thanks to changes in legislation that have welcomed a whole new branch to the sector into the state. We’re going to take a look at some different areas within gaming and how they’ve performed lately.

Online Poker

Since the legalization of online poker in 2019, Michigan’s online gaming sector has been growing. Companies have been using marketing ideas like Michigan poker bonuses to attract new players and keep hold of established customers. The most well-established sites have been up and running since early 2021, having spent plenty of time perfecting their offerings for customers. The stratospheric rise of these sites could partly be thanks to the already thriving live poker scene in Michigan. There are plenty of casinos that operate weekly live tournaments still, but many customers who enjoy these might also have welcomed online poker into the state.

Online Slots

Online slots are responsible for the vast majority of Michigan’s revenue from casino gaming. For example, the largest slots provider in Michigan generated $47 million in June of last year. Comparing this to the top poker site, which peaked at $10 million in June, it’s clear where the money is being made.

With this in mind, it might be interesting to find out that online slots became legal in 2019 and most of the top slots sites didn’t go live until 2021. Despite New Jersey having an eight-year headstart on Michigan, the revenue from both states this year is incredibly close to one another, both approaching $160 million for the financial year ending in April 2022. Seeing such a relatively young industry keeping pace with one of the most established in the US is great news for those working in the Michigan gaming sector. If online slot games continue to increase their market share in the way that they have been doing then it’s highly likely that Michigan will become the leader of this sector within the US.

Console Gaming

Michigan is home to 21 game development studios, all of them falling within the small to medium-sized business. There’s a thriving indie gaming scene, where smaller releases with cult followings tend to be the order of the day. Bowlcut Studios is one such developer, who prides itself on making multiplayer games that really focus on team dynamics and fun over fierce competition.

This unique approach has afforded them a loyal fanbase, who enjoy a ‘nerdy’ selection of games including Mage Quit, a ten-player brawler game, where you play as a wizard who must cast spells and also grow his beard. It’s clear that a sense of humor and wild imagination are necessary to get ahead in the Michigan console gaming market. However, with the worldwide interest in indie games growing, this could become a much more profitable sector in the coming years.
