SOUTHFIELD–The SAE Detroit Section will host a technical meeting Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the San Marino Club, 1685 E. Big Beaver Road in Troy. on the topic of “Thermal Runaway Propagation.”

The event begins with networking and refreshments from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with the presentation and question-and-answer session running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Thermal runaway propagation (TRP) occurs in a battery electric vehicle (BEV) when a single lithium‑ion cell becomes unstable by transferring enough thermal energy to its neighbors that they too are triggered to instability.

Understanding and mitigating against thermal propagation is one of the most difficult challenges currently facing BEV designers, as well as being a tightly coupled, stochastic problem that often defies Multiphysics simulation. Within automotive OEMs, TRP cuts across multiple engineering domains and organizational boundaries, touching on cell chemistry and lifecycle, thermal management, electrical bus layout, structural design, pack sealing, material selection, instrumentation, and software.

The following will be discussed:

Estimating heat release from a Li-ion cell in thermal runaway
The various pathways thermal energy can take
The relative importance of thermal barriers, active cooling, and gas management
The quantities and qualities of solid-, liquid-, and gas-phase ejecta
Data from mini-module thermal propagation testing
System engineering and prioritization when designing a TRP solution

Aspen Aerogels has emerged as an industry leader in the cell-to-cell barrier space, providing aerogel-based solutions to BEV OEMs such as GM, Toyota, and Scania. Aspen’s Aerogel Technology Platform has more than 20 years of providing thermal and passive fire protection in some of the world’s most challenging applications. The company’s PyroThin thermal barriers were recently honored with Automotive News’ PACE Award and the Innovation Partnership Award.

The presenter at the event will be Aspen Aerogels Vice President of Technical Services John Williams. Moderators will be Aspen Aerogels Senior Battery Program Engineer Tyler Gurian and Aspen Aerogels Senior Manager of Battery Program Engineering Preston Thompson.

Registration will close Thursday, Nov. 14 or when sold out. No onsite registration or refunds after Tuesday, Nov. 12.
