MIDLAND — Northwood Esports brought home another national championship over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, this time for Call of Duty.

“This title is something that the players should be extremely proud of; they put in the work leading up to the event and continued the same winning mentality while at the event,” said Northwood Esports Coach Cody Elsen. “I could not be more proud.”

The Timberwolves finished the regular season with a record of 19-1 and had the No. 2 national ranking heading into the Call of Duty national championship.

Northwood defeated No. 11 Southern Illinois University 3-0; No. 9 Westcliff University 3-0; No. 3 Ottawa University 3-0; eventually, that led to defeating No. 1 Bay State College 3-2 in the grand finals.
During the grand finals, Northwood had a back-and-forth match against Bay State leading to one of the most exciting finishes in collegiate Call of Duty history.

“This was simply pure determination not to lose by our team, we did everything right and relied on each other to take home the win,” said Northwood captain Christopher “Radial” Abbot, of Louisville, Kentucky.

Abbott was joined by fellow Northwood Call of Duty team members, Deandre Garcia and Fernando Reyes, both of Houston, Texas; and Donovan Koch of Cleveland, Ohio.

This victory gives Northwood its second major title in the last two weeks, as the Timberwolves won the Collegiate Rocket League World Championship June 5 in Dallas, Texas.

Northwood University is one of the premier collegiate Esports programs in the country, featuring a 2,000-plus square foot, state-of-the-art gaming center that caters to all levels of competitive gaming. Since the creation of its program in 2019, Northwood has quickly climbed the ranks and claimed multiple national titles in Rocket League and Overwatch, and now Call of Duty.
