LANSING — The Michigan Strategic Fund has offered Mitchell Plastics a $427,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant to support a new plant in Sterling Heights that will create 122 jobs.
The 200,000-square-foot plant represents a total investment of more than $20.5 million.
Michigan ranks first in new automotive-related jobs since 2009 with an increase of more than 200,000 through March 2016, according to the Center for Automotive Research. Michigan is also home to 63 of the top 100 North American auto suppliers.
Kitchener, Ontario-based Ultra Manufacturing USA Inc., which does business as Mitchell Plastics, is a supplier of automotive interior mechanisms and decorative components. State officials say the company has experienced rapid growth over the last five years and currently has 2,200 employees throughout Michigan, Alabama, and Indiana in the United States, as well as plants in Canada, Mexico, and Germany.
For this latest expansion, Michigan was chosen over competing sites in Ontario and Indiana.
The city of Sterling Heights is supporting the project in the form of property tax abatement.
