LANSING – Michigan lawmakers have proposed eight new designs this year, with a few already through the legislature, some halfway there and others still at the starting gate. Here’s a breakdown:
Michigan has dozens of plates that support organizations like sports teams and nonprofits or allow drivers to identify themselves as members of group like a military branch or university.
The Secretary of State’s office has final say over each new plate design. A mockup by Michigan State University Extension, which runs the 4-H program, shows the organization’s green clover logo on the left of Michigan’s blue and white base plate.
House Bill 4308, which passed the House in September, would create a plate to raise money for sickle cell anemia research and treatment. This rare but well-known blood disease disproportionately affects Black people.
Michigan’s only other license plate regarding an illness is a breast cancer awareness plate featuring a pink ribbon. The ribbon color for sickle cell disease is red.
