DEARBORN ? Nanette Poulios, Director of the Information Assurance Center, Walsh College, will deliver a talk on Oct. 9 during the Detroit SecureWorld Conference called Why Phishing Works.
The conference session, from 8:30 ? 9:15 am, will look at why our training often fails to produce the effects expected. Included will be phishing examples from the wild to investigate the every changing technique that phishing creators use to bypass security controls.
Poulios will look at the possible targets of these attacks and the economic impacts of these attacks. What Trojan, malware or other mischief is left behind? Do we have effective training methods to protect our organizations from these attacks? She will examine training content to determine if it effectively teaches the user how to behave when faced with a phishing attack. This will be an interactive session to share training ideas for this exploit.
Instances and costs of identity theft and online fraud are on the rise (Federal Trade Commission [FTC], 2006). Users are concerned about the privacy of their information on the Internet (Wang & Emurian, 2005). However, their actions when accessing web sites or clicking on e-mail links are in direct conflict with their privacy concerns. Literature reviews (Cranor, 2006; Dunning & Ramakrishnan, 2002; Wang & Emurian, 2005) of the usability factors of web sites suggest that security indicators are not a factor in users? evaluations of trustworthiness in web sites. Users often place their trust in the wrong elements.
She will also look at recommended solutions from the human computer interface perspective. Do we expect too much from the general user? This dichotomy of risky behavior and privacy values may be based on several interface design factors which make privacy and security decisions very difficult for users.
