DETORIT ? In August, the University of Detroit Mercy took eleven of its advanced information assurance students to Imperial College in London to learn about a new security standard that is certain to have a dramatic impact on every business in Michigan.

The goal was to understand the purpose and application of the forthcoming ISO 27000 standard, which will do for electronic security what ISO 9000 did for quality. ISO 27000 will provide international certification that a company is secure.

The ?seal of approval? is both a registered endorsement that a company?s electronic assets are secure as well as an indication to any prospective partner or customer that they can place the maximum level of trust in the security of any transactions with that company.

The students learned that there are actually six proposed standards in the 27000 series (numbered 27000 to 27005). However the standard of interest is ISO 27001, which is the Specification of Security Requirements. These requirements all must be complied with, in order to obtain the international certification.

Given the competitive advantage that such an endorsement will provide the experts all felt that market forces alone will make ISO 27001 registration an absolute necessity for any company doing business in the future.

The international studies program of the University of Detroit Mercy gives students a personal competitive advantage by teaching them how to function in multinational IT settings. In addition it provides exposure to critically important ideas that might not have made their way to the U.S. yet. ISO 27000 is one of those types of learning experiences.

This learning experience created 11 highly knowledgeable and well trained people in the Detroit area ready to assist companies who will be scrambling to leap on board the ISO 27000 bandwagon a year from now.
