TROY ? More than 1,000 eight grade students in the Troy School District found out how easy it is for hackers to harvest their personal information during an Internet Security career fair presentation sponsored by Walsh College.

Brian Gawne, vice president of Olympus Security Group, in a 20-minute talk given four times on Jan. 12-13, told students, teachers and parents how easy it is for bad people to collect information on them over the Internet.

Troy School District Cheryl Guc said everyone was surprised how vulnerable they really are in cyberspace.

?It wasn?t their intent to scare them, but it did open up their eyes on what to do and not to do on the Internet,?? Guc said. ?Parents and teachers were surprised at how much info they could get and how easy it is for others to take personal information about you from the Internet.?

In one example, Gawne talked about how a teenager thought he was downloading a game, and instead downloaded some pornography. He was arrested.

Gawne also middle school students, who will become freshmen this fall, about careers in the Security industry.

?I spent half my time on what the security job market was like,?? he said. ?I told them where to get more information. Some students were very interested.?
