CUPERTINO, CA. – Security vendor Trend Micro has announced its new gateway-based hardware solution, called InterScan Security Suite, that is designed to provide companies with comprehensive protection against malware and content security threats.

The InterScan Web Security Appliance can work with Trend Micro stand alone and integrated anti-spyware solutions, to provide a flexible, multi-layered security solution that defends every end point in a business network – from Internet gateways to Web servers to desktops.

For example, a corporate user with a laptop in a hotel room picks up spyware. Spyware has many places it can hide on a system, for example disguising itself as a DLL. It can act differently, such as spreading to different ports. But there are only so many IP addresses on the Internet that spyware writers can use.

InterScan automatically blocks access to known spyware sites. Trend Micro likens it to robbers making it into the bank, but not getting away with the money.

“Once we’ve identified a collection site, one where a spyware writer has designed to collect all the information s/he is stealing, it doesn’t matter how many pieces are written, be they keyloggers, cookie scanners, or password stealers; they will pose no threat,” the company said.

The program is analyzed to see how it works. With the information Trend already had, it was simple mater of adding a URL filtering routine to the base product.

Spyware is the number one threat today, but the second most important threat is webmail, which is often how viruses are spread. The new appliance also plugs the webmail hole.
