CUPERTINO, Ca. – Network antivirus and Internet content security vendor Trend Micro has announced the addition of new security features in its mobile protection solution.

Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 (TMMS3.0) is intended to protect against hackers and intrusions while improving on previously available mobile malicious code protection for mobile malware and SMS spam.

“Trend Micro Mobile Security provides the channel with a more compelling offer to provide to enterprise customers,” said Todd Thiemann, Director for Device Security Marketing at Trend Micro.

“TMMS 3.0 combines antivirus, firewall and intrusion detection system (IDS) whereas the previous offering was antivirus-only. The mobile security area is an emerging ‘greenfield’ opportunity for channel partners to generate more revenue. Channel partners can locate customers deploying mobile solutions like push email or ‘mobilizing’ applications like Siebel CRM and provide security for the devices.”

TMMS 3.0 is designed for ease-of-use, providing users a simple interface intended to provide maximum security with minimal impact on the user and device. It supports a variety of devices running operating systems that include Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone and PocketPC, and Symbian OS 9.1/S60 3rd Edition.

Trend Micro claims to be the first of top security software players to provide antivirus/firewall/intrusion detection for the increasingly popular Windows Mobile 5.0.

“Others have pieces or have antivirus/firewall for other platforms, but none has the combination for Windows Mobile 5.0,” said Thiemann. “Customers do not want multiple applications on their devices due to the complexity. We are increasing levels of security while minimizing complexity through this introduction.”

New firewall and intrusion detection capabilities are intended to help block malicious attacks by offering protection that can be set to low, medium, or high. The ability to block specific IP addresses and ports provides additional protection. Customers are expected to benefit from increased security while maintaining simplicity.

“Mobile device users can be quite finicky and do not want to have their experience ruined with burdensome security applications,” Thiemann said.

“TMMS 3.0 provides exceptional security while minimizing the imposition on the user and device. The risk you run with a burdensome application is that users will stop using their device or fiddle with the security if they perceive it to interfere with their experience.”
