MOUNTAIN VIEW – Mac users that run both Mac OS X Leopard and Windows operating systems are now able to protect their environment better with Symantec Corp.’s new Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac.
The software features vulnerability protection technology and anti-virus for Mac users running Boot Camp or Windows virtualization software, which are programs that allow users to run both Mac OS X Leopard and Windows operating systems.
“What we are seeing this year and next is virtualization becoming a standard way of doing business,” said Michael Romo, product manager of Norton for Mac products with Symantec. “It makes their lives easier to run one machine with multiple operating systems. We are in a multiple OS world that it made sense for companies like Symantec to provide really good protection regardless of platform.”
Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac is comprised of Norton AntiVirus 11 for Mac and Norton AntiVirus 2008 for Windows. The combined software automatically detects and removes viruses, scans and cleans downloaded files and e-mail attachments and incorporates discrete yet effective security alerts. In addition, Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac is designed to automatically update itself in the background, allowing users to conduct their online activities without interruption.
As well, it includes performance and engine improvements to ensure better compatibility and less impact on system startup and resource usage, so users can safely continue their online activities without impacting their productivity.
Additionally, Romo said that the product goes beyond traditional anti-virus to also include intrusion prevention and vulnerability protection for Macs as well as rootkit protection and behavioral protection to block malware then delete the threat so it isn’t loaded onto Windows environments.
Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac also leverages Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network, a worldwide network comprised of information security and operations specialists as well as Symantec’s global community of thousands of Internet activity sensors.
Romo said that in the past, if people wanted to protect their Mac and Windows environment, they would have to buy and install two separate products.
“We are really looking at multiple environments more closely and feel that this kind of dual protection cross-platform support is the future for all security vendors,” he added.
Norton Dual Protection for Mac is available for purchase through the Symantec Store. The product is also available for purchase at select online and retail outlets. The estimated retail price for Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac is $69.95 US and includes a one-year subscription.
