TROY ? Brian Gawne, vice president of Olympus Security, provides a quick over view of what companies can do to keep their computer networks secure.
Gawne said the basic steps include:
Use of passwords
Patch management of operating systems and applications
Use of antivirus technology at multiple levels
Firewalls at the desktop and enterprise level
Phishing controls/protection
Data backup
?There are numerous ways of backing up data which can range from utilizing external USB firewire hard drives to tape backup solutions,?? Gawne said. ?It depends upon budget and the amount of data to backup.?
To measure how secure an organization is, the organization would have to contract with an external organization or university to have a security assessment performed, which could range from something as simple as a vulnerability scan to a full blown assessment in which every system within the company?s environment would be reviewed.
?The main point of this is it all comes down to common sense and procedures,?? he said.
