MARQUETTE ? Ten years ago, Northern Michigan University launched a laptop prorgram. On Thursday, the Upper Peninsula school rolled outs its first mobile WIMax Network in conjunction with the Home & Networks Mobility business of Motorola Inc.

Now NMU is the only Michigan university that provides WiMax-enabled laptop computers to all students as part of their tuition and to faculty and staff employed at the school.

With this rollout NMU becomes the first university in the United States to deploy a fully functional Motorola WiMAX network. At Thursday’s kick-off event nearly 3,000 of the school’s more than 9,000 students received new WiMax-enabled laptops, the school said in a press release.

In the near future Motorola WiMax devices, including the USBw 100 USB adaptor dongle and desktop CPEi 150 and CPEo 450 will be available to students and others with older laptops so they, too, can connect to the WiMAX network. The mobile network currently consists of four sites with plans to expand to seven locations. Backhaul for the WiMAX network is provided by Motorola’s point-to-point wireless broadband solution.
