MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ca. – McAfee Inc. has announced the release of a new set of McAfee Data Protection solutions.
“It is the coming together of all the products that [McAfee] has acquired in the data protection space over the last several years onto a common management platform and coming together as a unified solution for data protection,” said Chris Parkerson, McAfee’s Data Protection group solution marketing manager.
McAfee’s Data Protection solutions include an encryption product which was acquired via the company’s SafeBoot acquisition. Parkerson cited encryption is being done on laptops, mobile devices, file servers and third-party USB devices. As well, there is device control and management at the end point and data loss prevention at the end point.
Aside from looking at the end point, McAfee’s data protection solutions will offer protection on the network. This solution is based on the recently acquired Reconnex solutions that help companies understand all types of data that may be at risk, not just well-understood structured kinds like customer and financial record data. More complex, yet increasingly important types like intellectual property, internal memos and strategy documents, can now be understood and protected.
“What we do is help automate the process of finding that information which then allows you to make choices in terms of what security you apply much more judiciously so you are able to apply only the security you need to the information that actually needs it,” explained Parkerson.
Also, all of the McAfee Data Protection solutions are integrated with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) software, which helps companies reduce overall operational costs, and the costs of meeting compliance and governance obligations.
However, Parkerson said he doesn’t expect companies to buy all the solutions in one go.
“Customers wanted to see from McAfee a road map for protection, how they can go about getting on the path for developing the right data protection solution for their organization. Not many organizations are going to swallow all of these pieces at once; that is unrealistic. They know they want to get there and want McAfee to help guide them on the path and have all the parts there [when they are ready for complete data protection,]” he added.
In conjunction with the new data protection solutions, McAfee has also released a new white paper, “The Business Justification for Data Security,” developed by independent research firm Securosis, and released in cooperation with the SANS Institute, which focuses the case for data protection, balanced against other threats such as viruses, worms, and spam.
“The white paper has in it a model that customers can walk through and help them make the choices about where to begin on [the data protection] path and how the path should look to them to get to a complete data protection strategy based on their needs and own cost constraints,” said Parkerson.
