DETROIT – The Detroit Regional Chamber lead a coalition of businesses and Chambers of Commerce from across the northern border of the United States to Washington DC last week to lobby the Department of Homeland Security to relax some planned security changes that would make it harder for anyone to cross between the U.S. and Canada.
“DHS has several legislative initiatives directing their border security and state identity efforts that are in some cases counter productive to the free flow of traverlers between the two countries, and while we are all for a more secure border, we also need a solution that is efficient to traffic flow and cost effective to implement and adhere to,” said DRC Chief Information Officer, Hans Erickson, who also is a member of Michigan InfraGard.
The Chamber and others are proposing use of an enhanced drivers license that could include RFID technology and other security features which would prove identity and citizenship. Erickson said the Chamber opposes new regulations that would require anyone traveling between the U.S. and Canada to have expensive new documentation.
