Do you run a construction business? If so, you may question why it’s hard to maximize profits, or even why it feels like you’re bleeding money here and there. Even after completing some successful jobs, you still fail to see any forward momentum. Well, it turns out this is incredibly common – and it’s normally because of these forgotten areas of your business that make you lose money. 

Equipment Transportation

A lot of construction companies forget about equipment transportation and what this means for their overall business. If you don’t give it enough attention, you’ll end up spending a fortune paying companies to come and pick up your stuff, then transport it elsewhere. Moreover, because you rely on a third party, you could experience delays – which may mean you’re late to the next job and have to give your customer a partial refund. Or, even worse, you miss out on contracts because you can’t be there soon enough. 

This is all solvable with an equipment trailer that you buy for your company – or two trailers, depending on what you need to transport. Now, you’ve got an easy way to load up your items and move them from place to place without relying on anyone else. It saves both money and time, which can also help you get through more projects in a month, allowing you to earn more money. 

Charging Too Little

You want to be an affordable business that outprices the competitors, but don’t get into the habit of charging too little for your services. Construction companies do this often by providing full quotes for jobs without taking all the different services into account. You should only ever give a preliminary estimate, followed by a disclaimer that you may have to charge more. 

If you offer a quote in the beginning and promise that it won’t change, you may end up working for free at times or dealing with additional materials costs yourself. It’s a silly thing to do, so make sure you provide accurate quotes in the beginning, with room to increase the price if necessary. 

Bad Scheduling

When you’re not working, you’re not earning money. Too many construction businesses will only focus on one project at a time. You shouldn’t try to work on two different sites at once, but you can always line up some projects for the future. Build a waiting list while you’re working on one project so you can develop a schedule and minimize your empty days. 

Instead of working a job for a week, then having nothing for two weeks, you can go from the first job to a new one in the space of a day or two – and then have another lined up right away. Previously, you were getting paid for one project within the month, but now you’re getting paid for three. 

Don’t let these areas of your business go unnoticed. If you forget them, then you’ll lose a lot of money – either by poor scheduling, logistical issues, or charging the wrong amount for a job. Â
