ANN ARBOR – IT Zone member Thomas Schramm was featured in the Business Section of the Ann Arbor News for his contribution to the green eco-friendly computer industry. Thomas began assembling and selling environmentally friendly computers earlier this year through his new company, GreenMachineShop.Com
.
Although only 20 ?green? machines have been purchased so far, Thomas sees a bright future in this field. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced it?s first-ever standards for green computers. They are known as the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT.
Thomas says his computers go beyond both U.S. and European ?green? standards. They are also designed to emit fewer electromagnetic waves, be ergonomic, highly energy-efficient, quieter and easier on the eyes.
The increasing awareness of and receptivity to ?green? computers is a boon for Thomas? business. Boosting this awareness is the media?s increasing coverage of the dangers posed by toxic electronic landfills in China and other developing countries where old computers are dumped. Groups that track e-waste estimate as many as 600 million computers will be obsolete in the coming five years in the US. Many contain high levels of hazardous materials.
