ANN ARBOR – Are you concerned about the environment? Are you interested in seeing Michigan reduce energy consumption by 15 percent?

The Delta Institute, a Chicago-based nonprofit foundation, has formed the Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency (P2E2) Center. The P2E2 Center plans to keep Michigan businesses competitive even as energy costs soar and the volatility of fuel prices force business cutbacks in staff, benefits, and R&D.

P2E2 is determined to stimulate widespread adoption of pollution prevention and energy efficiency measures. Their strategy is simple: help facilities cut energy costs and reduce pollution by becoming more efficient. They work with small- and mid-sized manufacturers, local governments, school districts, and civic institutions to cut energy costs by 15 percent or more.

The Center provides direct financing through efficiency contracts and loans through LaSalle Bank. They need help to spread the word to Michigan businesses that this low-cost resource is available to them.

IT Zone members learned about this exciting, fully funded project for large-scale energy conservation at a lunch presentation hosted by P2E2. The presenters were Todd Parker of P2E2 and Abby Corso of the Delta Institute. They presented real-life examples of Michigan-based office buildings and manufacturing facilities that are benefiting from the P2E2 project.

Each client contracts with P2E2 for an investment grade audit. Specialized contractors conduct the audit to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution. Technical underwriting determines which recommendations are feasible to implement and promise to provide expected savings. The cost of the audit and underwriting can be rolled into financing for projects the facility undertakes. This limits up-front costs for big long-term savings.

P2E2 is interested in hearing from companies with energy-saving products and solutions, as well as companies and organizations interested in reducing their energy costs.
