DEARBORN – The first hybrid SUV to reach the market will cost just less than $27,000 in base front-drive form. Ford says the Escape Hybrid vehicle will reach showrooms later this summer wearing a base price of $26,970 including destination; a four-wheel-drive version will retail for $28,595.

The full-hybrid system in the new ute blends electric and four-cylinder gas power to give V-6-like acceleration and fuel economy in the city ranging from 35 to 40 mpg. The prices, Ford says, are about $3,300 to $3,425 above the price for comparable gas-only Escapes.
