TROY – LG Chem Ltd., a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for automotive, stationary and consumer applications, has launched new residential battery systems in the North American market.

The launch follows successful completion of UL certification and represents LG Chem’s initial foray into the North American residential market. The home energy storage systems are already being sold in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

LG Chem’s North American residential battery range offers AC- and DC-coupled systems with capacities up to 9.8 kilowatt hours. Two voltage options are available, pre-matched with compatible inverters and suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation — a low-voltage 48-volt system with capacities of 3.3, 6.5 and 9.8kWh, and a high-voltage 400-volt system with capacities of 7 and 9.8kWh.

The 400V RESU10H (9.8kWh) product is compatible with SolarEdge’s StorEdge, which is a DC-coupled storage system for solar photovoltaic systems based on a single inverter for both PV and storage. Additional inverter compatibility options will become available later in 2017 to provide homeowners with a range of pre-tested systems from the industry’s leading suppliers.

LG Chem’s residential batteries will be available through solar and energy storage providers in North America. Following last year’s announcement of a partnership with LG Chem, Sunrun, the San Francisco, Calif.-based residential energy system provider, will be supplying LG Chem’s RESU systems. Sunrun already has installed  systems in both Hawaii and California. Additional distribution channels are in negotiations and will provide coverage to all U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

“LG Chem’s entry into the North American residential battery market is based on much planning, product development and system testing,” said Peter Gibson, who leads energy storage systems sales ofr LG Chem in North America. “We’re confident that our experience gained in Europe and Asia, coupled with strong inverter and distribution partners, will deliver exceptional performance and reliability for our residential customers in the U.S. and Canada. Customers can now enhance the benefits of their residential solar systems by using our batteries to maximize consumption of solar energy, and to use the batteries as a dependable source of energy during grid interruptions.”

Advanced, safe and highly reliable automotive quality lithium-ion battery cells are used throughout LG Chem’s range of residential and grid-scale battery systems. LG Chem has been awarded 82 projects from 28 global automakers as of September 2016, and deployed gigawatt-hours of global stationary battery projects.

Seoul-based LG Chem Ltd.’s LG Chem Power Inc. subsidiary has a battery plant in Holland, a plant now being expanded and adding 150 new jobs, and its headquarters in Troy. The Holland plant manufactures batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles, including the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Chevrolet Volt. For more information, visit http://lgcpi.com/about-lgcpi/.
