LANSING – Total utility customers participating in electric choice programs in 2017 were down from the previous year, as were the number of cable subscribers in the state, according to a pair of annual reports released Thursday.

The Public Service Commission released its yearly Status of Electric Competition in Michigan and Status of Competition for Video Services in Michigan reports, outlining key points in state participation.

In the electric competition report, a total of 5,929 customers statewide were participating in electric choice programs as of December 2017, down from 6,060 during 2016. Those customers represent about 1,962 megawatts of electric demand in the state, which was a decrease of 16 megawatts.

Nearly all of the customers participating in the program are industrial and commercial customers. The report also points to 7,039 customers signaling interest in joining the program.

Video services report figures put the number of Michigan video and cable customers at just over 2 million through the end of 2017. This is the lowest level in five years and a decline of about 131,000 subscribers since 2016. Total customers were spread between 38 cable providers in the state.

The PSC did note that the 860 complaints filed with the state in 2017 were below that of total complaints that came to the office in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Common complaints were over billing, cable line issues or what is classified as false, misleading or deceptive information.

Both complete reports are available at the PSC website.
