FLINT – Kettering University will dedicate the $1.2 million Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering Laboratories Sept. 13 at the Mott Engineering and Science Building.

The Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering Laboratories at Kettering will enable students to ?better understand the most elegantly engineered structure known ? the human body,? said Patrick Atkinson, PhD, professor of Mechanical Engineering.

The new labs support new curriculum at Kettering that will enable students to get an engineering degree as preparation for medical school or a career in pharmaceuticals. The laboratories are multi-use spaces that can be used in tandem or separately by converting to surgery simulation suites complete with surgical scrub sinks where students will perform simulated surgery.

Classes to be taught using the labs include: Anatomy and Physiology, Bio-Chemistry I & II, Biology I & II and Introduction to Bio-Engineering Applications.

The Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering Laboratories are dedicated in honor of Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller for their support enabling construction. Dane Miller ?69 is co-founder of Biomet, Inc., serving as President and CEO of the company for 28 years. Biomet designs and manufactures surgical and non-surgical orthopedic medical devices and reconstructive products, pioneering the use of titanium alloy for replacement knees and hips.

Miller received a Mechanical Engineering degree from Kettering/GMI in 1969 and master?s and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Cincinnati in 1971 and 1974.

A strong supporter of Kettering University and Kettering Motorsports, Miller has been a dedicated member of the Kettering Board of Trustees and is a member of President?s Council. He is the recipient of the Entrepreneurial Achievement Award in 1989 and Outstanding Achievement Award in 2006 from the Kettering Alumni Association and the 75th Anniversary Award from GMI-EMI in 1994.

Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) is one of the country?s premier co-op institutions and provides 2,200 students with career-based education in engineering, applied sciences, mathematics, and business management.
