LANSING – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources currently is seeking public comment on the final draft of its 2016-2020 Wildlife Division Strategic Plan – Guiding Principles and Strategies. The GPS sets the DNR Wildlife Division’s strategic direction for the management of Michigan’s unique wildlife resources for the next five years.
The plan clearly defines the principles that guide the division’s work and the strategies to reach goals and objectives. The GPS also helps to set priorities for wildlife management and coordination of conservation efforts with partners.
The GPS engagement process identified 13 strategic issues for the division, which remain the same in the updated plan:
- Wildlife population management
- Wildlife habitat management
- Land use and economic development
- Access to lands for wildlife recreation
- Hunting heritage
- External communication
- Positive relationships
- Internal communication
- Workforce
- Internal administration
- Infrastructure
- Funding
- Managing adaptively
The plan and, more specifically, the strategic issues have guided the Wildlife Division’s work since 2010.
The 2016 GPS update was developed using a similar, streamlined approach based on stakeholder engagement from the initial GPS development in 2010 – with workshops, presentations and online surveys.
