LANSING – While the Michigan Department of State and Hewlett Packard await continuation of a court hearing on their dispute over how they managed the Business Application Modernization project, HP has returned its workers to the state, a department spokesperson said.

The state terminated its contract with HP and then sued the company. HP pulled its workers from the project and refused to turn over the source code. Major worries have been raised about a collapse of online services without access to that source code and an orderly transition.

The state is seeking a preliminary injunction ordering HP’s staff back to work and the turning over of the source code.

Department spokesperson Gisgie Davila Gendreau said HP staff was working side-by-side Monday with staff from the departments of State and Technology, Management and Budget. And the two sides are working out a transition plan, she said.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” she said.

The court hearing on the motion for a preliminary injunction is scheduled resume Friday.
